Education & Audio: The Audio Engineering Society provides resources for audio students
By Laura B. WhitmoreDo you teach audio recording or interact with audio students on a regular basis? Then you should know about the educational benefits of the Audio Engineering Society, or AES, an organization that connects audio professionals with each other. For a minimal investment – only $30 per year – audio students and educators can take advantage of this network.
John Krivit, Vice Chair of Education for AES, explains some of the programs that AES provides. ”First of all, AES has a convention every year. Not only do the manufacturers of all the gear that audio professionals use exhibit there, but we also present many educational sessions,“ he explains. Tutorials, workshops and master classes are conducted throughout the convention, which is typically hosted in New York and San Francisco on alternating years (the 2009 U.S. convention is set for October 9-12, 2009 in New York). Events in London, Munich, Detroit, Nashville and Denmark are also set for 2009. AES also has regional chapters that organize events throughout the United States.
With constant changes in the audio industry, students can benefit by learning about new products and trends. Plus, meeting and hearing industry professionals talk about their techniques, tips and best practices is invaluable for students getting ready to enter the job market.
Mr. Krivit, a producer, engineer, performer, composer and educator, is a full-time Associate Professor of Audio & Media Technology at The New England Institute of Art who also teaches audio at Emerson College and Bay State College. He has been involved with AES for several years and has planned several regional events for the organization. ”If you take a look at my website, www.heyaudiostudent.com you can see some of the recent events that we’ve organized. We’ve brought together hundreds of students, professionals and educators and presented workshops and networking events. It’s great to bring in veteran engineers and producers that students can meet, ask questions of and get to know.“
In addition, high school students can take advantage of AES’ Directory of Educational Programs, which provides prospective audio students with information about schools, universities, colleges and other institutes that offer education and training in audio engineering and other related fields. You’ll find information about the programs offered, facilities, tuition costs and more for institutions throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America and other parts of the world. ”Our goal with the directory listings,“ says Krivit, ”is not to recommend or accredit any program, but to simply provide information that can help students know where to go to look further.“ Students will find it helpful to have these listings all in one place so they can know their options. The directory can be found on the AES website, www.aes.org.
AES hosts several other events, such as career fairs, to help students connect with employers for internships and work; mentoring sessions; and recording and design competitions, judged by world-famous engineers, producers, and equipment designers.
Finally, AES offers grants through its educational foundation to graduate students who are planning to continue their studies in audio engineering and related fields and have demonstrated a commitment to audio engineering as a career choice.
