Elementary Music Tech: Groovy Music Gets Students Involved In Music

Sibelius’ Groovy series of programs is aimed at helping students from as young as 5 years old to as old as 12 learn the fundamentals of music. There are three programs each aimed at an age and level group. Groovy Shapes starts the series, with lessons aimed at students ages 5 to 7. The second level is called Groovy Jungle and has a variety of lessons targeted for 7 to 9 year olds. Finally, there’s Groovy City, which goes one level higher to teach students ages 9 to 12. Fun and easy to use, Groovy Music teaches the basics of sound, rhythm, pitch and composition using pictures and animation – progressing to the study of simple notation as well as major and minor scales.

Each Groovy program was created after extensive worldwide research with children and educators, and is designed to make learning interactive, exciting and downright fun. The lessons address the National Standards for music instruction. The programs can be used individually or in music labs and come with a variety of leveled lesson plans that teachers can use as is or customize as needed. Extension activities and suggestions are included as well. Groovy also works great with a smart board and some desktop speakers. A teacher with one computer could easily engage an entire class in a Groovy Music lesson!

The clever characters that help students learn about music also make the programs approachable and non-threatening. You’ll find skyscrapers, trees, and butterflies and many more wonderfully drawn cartoon characters throughout. Students can learn music fundamentals that get them making their own music in no time.
