Introduction to Euclidian Geometry: both “Plane” and “Solid.”
Shapes & Nets is a simple-to-use primary software which is especially valuable in two main areas: Maths Shape and Space, and Design Technology in Packaging, Design and Make.

Shapes are everywhere in the real world, many structures both natural and man-made comprise sets of 3D and 2D geometrical shapes. Take a look around and recognise how many cuboids, spheres, pyramids, prisms there are in the objects you see, touch and use everyday.

On close inspection you might notice that your computer is made up of different sized cuboids and prisms. How about the table or chair you are sitting on, the door to the room, the filing cabinet? And what about the Saturn V rocket, it seems to be made from lots of cylinders and cones! Geometry is all around us; in nature and in the things we make and use.

Shapes & Nets contains many 2D and 3D shapes and enables you to investigate them, change their properties to make them long and thin, or short and fat, translate them and rotate them. Shapes & Nets is a good tool for developing spatial concepts, helping children to gain an intuitive feel for shape and space.

Shapes & Nets gives a practical application for traditional geometrical concepts, and helps to improve the ability to recognize, visualize, represent, and transform geometric shapes. Most of us take geometry for granted, but using Shapes & Nets will help children apply their spatial awareness and knowledge of the properties of shapes and space to the real world.

What is aspexShapes & Nets?
aspexShapes & Nets is very easy for primary aged children to use.

  • Draw color 2D and 3D shapes with just a couple of mouse clicks – cuboids, cones, cylinders, prisms, etc.

  • Learn the names of 2D shapes and simple 3D solids

  • Rotate 3D solids and see how they look from different angles. The program allows the student to rotate by 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 turns

  • Increase or decrease the size of 3D solids by a certain ratio, such as 2, 3, or 4 times the original size

  • Add patterns or colors to each side of a solid. Students can even import their own pictures and graphics

  • Duplicate shapes

  • Print out the NETS, showing the fold lines and glue tabs to fold and glue to make real 3D models.

  • Design and make boxes for packaging

  • Learn about Tesselations and how to use them

Activities include:

  • Shape investigations

  • Tesselations

  • Packaging

  • Platonic Solids

  • Solar System

  • 3D Street Scenes

aspexShapes & Nets in Design & Technology
imageWith aspexShapes & Nets students design and make their own individual packaging from 3D solid shapes. For example, a triangular prism makes a “Toblerone” pack.

aspexShapes & Nets in Mathematics
Drawing and making shapes on the computer is a practical way to explore mathematical shapes in 2D and 3D.

Draw cuboids, cones, pyramids, prisms and other simple shapes together and see how they unfold into flat 2D NETS.

System Requirements
Shapes & Nets: Windows: XP / 2000 / Vista
