In Grouping and Place Value students develop their sense of our number system in a variety of grouping activities. Students place familiar objects into equal groups of tens and hundreds, then count out their objects into smaller groups based on sets of ones, tens, and hundreds. Students gain practical experience working with money and a firm understanding of our number system. Students become more comfortable working with larger numbers. With an active understanding of place value, they are able to engage in dynamic addition and subtraction. Students can save samples of their best work in multimedia journals for review discussion.
Throughout this investigation, students have opportunities to:
- Estimate the number of objects in a collection of objects
- Use groups of the same size to count a collection of objects
- Use the natural number sets, namely twos, fives, tens.
- Count and combine tens to build one hundred
- Create visual representations of tens and hundreds
- Name numbers in different ways using ones, tens, hundreds
- Develop a sense of place value
- Solve addition and subtraction problems informally
- Find different coin combinations that produce a given total
- Exchange coins
- Explore number groups central to our number system
