In Algebra Stars students build their understanding of algebra by constructing, categorizing, and solving equations, and classifying polynomial expressions using algebra tiles. In addition to raising their comfort level with algebraic equations, students also:
- advance their knowledge of the properties of number sets
- use deductive reasoning skills
- improve their algebra fluency
In the first activity, students sort algebraic sentences into groups to match provided descriptions, learning to read and recognize algebraic equations. In the second activity, students construct equations to satisfy conditions posed by randomly generated verbal sentences, learning how to apply the different components of algebraic equations.
Students build skills and master concepts in:
- linear equations
- inequalities
- polynomial expressions
- quadratic functions
These timed or untimed algebra tile games can be played competitively between students or against the program, with numerous rounds of play and competitive scoring. Students can gauge their skills by examining a printable report on how well they have performed for each problem set in both activities. A glossary is available throughout the program to help students precisely determine important terminology.
