Grade Levels: 5-Adult
Discover the origins of modern transportation with this hands-on investigation of the lives and times of the innovators who helped create the plane, train, and automobile.
In this award-winning program, your students meet the inventors and tour their authentically reproduced laboratories which contain patents, photographs, and 100 other historic documents. Students can flip through notebooks, view and use tools as they freely explore models of famous inventions!
In the Labs
Your students travel to Kitty Hawk to experiment with the Wright Brothers' engine-powered airplane! They operate a wind tunnel to determine the best wing shape, and learn the function of propellers, pilot position, and rudders. They examine George Stephenson's revolutionary Rocket Train, directly investigating the relationships between wheels, railbeds and motion. And they learn how a 4-stroke engine works in Gottieb Daimler's lab where the 1901 Mercedes Simplex is being built.
Users Workbook
Throughout the program, students record their experimentation in an electronic journal.
Road Race
Students can apply their learning in Road Race, where they design and race their own vehicles dealing with performance factors such as drag, friction, engine power, and thrust. Students try their cars out on twelve different courses, adapting their designs to best fit the demands of the track.
Timeline
Interactive timeline helps students place these inventions in an historic context.
Internet Connection
Students can go online for additional resources and games.
