Use visual models to build number concepts. Students develop understanding of number meaning and uses, explore part-whole number relationships, and groupings on numbers. This bundle assists students in building a foundation for later mathematical skills. The following titles are contained in this bundle:
Number Meanings and Counting
Students develop their understanding of number meanings and uses while solving a variety of problems. Through engaging contexts, such as parades and games, students learn that numbers are symbols for specific quantities and that numbers can be represented in a variety of ways – for example, with numerals, tallies, words, or drawings.
This investigation helps forms a foundation for later work with place value, operations, and estimation. Students can use electronic journals to record written or spoken description of their work.
Grouping and Place Value
Students develop their sense of our number system in a variety of grouping activities. Students place familiar objects into equal groups of tens and hundreds, then count out their objects into smaller groups based on sets of ones, tens, and hundreds. Students gain practical experience working with money and a firm understanding of our number system. Students become more comfortable working with larger numbers. With an active understanding of place value, they are able to engage in dynamic addition and subtraction. Students can save samples of their best work in multimedia journals for review discussion.
Combining and Breaking Apart Numbers
Students develop their number sense as they engage in ‘real-life' dilemmas, which demonstrate the basic concepts of operations. In this investigation, students have the opportunity to:
add and subtract informally
use a number line to solve problems
understand place value concepts
discover number patterns and relationships
collect, sort, and organize data
visually, verbally, and symbolically represent ideas in personal journals
